About

The Arc building will be open to the public as part of Heritage Open Days 2010, from 10am – 4pm on Thursday 9 – Sunday 12 September.During the open days, the centre is offering ‘something for all ages’ including a ‘build a giant gingerbread house’ activity for children, information on their Hullness project, as well as giving visitors the chance to view the current exhibition ‘East meets West’. A free guided tour of the oldfruit market district will also be given on the Saturday by heritage expert Hilary Byers, meeting at 2pm at the Arc building.

The ‘East meets West’ exhibition is the culmination of a project by Arc to commission two photographers – Saeed Taji Farouky and Sarah Jane Daniels, to depict the similarities and differences between the east and west areas of Hull. The exhibition explores the city’s heritage – from the buildings connected to Hull’s fishing and milling industries, to the city’s often competitive communities from both sides of the river, young and old, and the passion for their sports teams.

The Hullness project is asking residents of the city if they can define the ‘spirit of place’ for Hull, and people are being encouraged to submit their thoughts by completing a Hullness questionnaire, or by texting or emailing images to the organisation. The information will be made into an archive and also displayed in a major exhibition planned for 2011.

Michael Haughton, Chief Executive said: “We are pleased to be opening our doors on what looks set to be yet another fantastic weekend for the city centre. With the Freedom festival, real ale festival and Heritage Open Days all happening, we’re looking forward to welcoming a large number of people to the building to experience the range of free activities we have to offer.”

Entrance to Arc is free, and visitors can also sign up to become an ‘Arc member’ at no extra cost.

The Arc building is on Queen Street, Blanket Row, Hull, HU1 1UG.
