About

Arc, the architecture centre for Hull and the Humber region, is running a 10-session evening course, in conjunction with the University of Hull, offering learners the chance to develop an understanding and appreciation of architecture and of what makes good design. The ‘I love Architecture’ course, which complements the current programme of regional regeneration and development, will give learners an opportunity to study architecture from the earliest examples through to contemporary present-day structures and spaces. Students will develop their understanding of architecture, public realm and what makes good design through looking at: • Case studies • History of architecture • The evolving nature of design This fully-accredited course is open to young people, professionals and the general public. The course costs £89 for the full 10 weeks, but is free to those in receipt of certain benefits or with a gross annual family household income below £16,845. The course is supported by HMR Gateway Pathfinder and CABE. Participants will be required to contribute to discussions and share ideas, in an informal atmosphere. Each individual will be required to create their own project, which will be discussed at the first session. An in-depth understanding of the built environment is not needed, as this course is an opportunity to increase your knowledge of design in relation to the built world and the spaces in between buildings, the value and impact of good design, and to develop your appreciation of design issues in the community. In addition to exploring local architecture, good design practice and its place in the region, there is a chance to look at other countries and cultures to broaden learners’ understanding of how architecture affects living – including looking briefly across to our neighbours in Holland for ideas on how they tackle urban design. “If you are keen to learn more about architecture, design, public realm, local history and influences from other countries and cultures, then this is the course for you!” Gisele Bone, Arc’s head of learning.
